Echoes worked for Pink Floyd but not for CNN!

CNN_com-logoThe story: ’Affluenza’ teen caught, but will he get off easy? (cnn.com 12-29-15)

The mistake:  “The so-called “affluenza” teen Ethan Couch and his mother, who were being sought by Texas authorities, have been detained in the Pacific resort town town of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.”

The Copy Vigilante says: I love Pink Floyd and they did some freaky, far out things with sound and music. But the last time I checked CNN was not in the music business. So do their editors work in an echo chamber? Or Echo Canyon? Or or do do they they just just miss miss errors errors?

Here are some of the Copy Vigilante’s favorite books:
Philip K. Dick – Selected Stories of Philip K. Dick, David McCullough – Truman and William Manchester – American Caesar: Douglas MacArthur 1880 – 1964.

Fish in a barrel, cnn.com, fish in a barrel

The story: Has Air France Flight 447 mystery finally been solved? (cnn.com 7-4-12)

The mistakes: The lack of speed, wind or direction information also prevented the Autopilot system from functioning, said air accident investigator Alain Bouillard said at the time of the crash.

According to Learmount, many aviation experts have yet to rule out the human factor. “The crash happened at around 2:00 a.m. on a dark night…”

“Whether it was out of control — and I doubt this — it was not being controlled. Imagine it is 2 am and two sleepy pilots…”

The Copy Vigilante says: We don’t need two “saids” but do need consistency when it comes to showing the time. It’s either 2:00 a.m. or 2 am so come on CNN, pick one!

This ain’t rocket science, cnn.com, even if it is Ray Bradbury!

The story: Sci-fi legend Ray Bradbury dies (cnn.com 6-6-12)

The mistake: “In my later years I have looked in the mirror each day and found a happy person staring back.” he wrote in a book of essays published in 2005. “Occasionally I wonder why I can be so happy…”

The Copy Vigilante says: The screaming period that stops this sentence dead should be a comma. Hello cnn.com, did any of your editors take Editing 101?!

Ok CNN, you had me at “sex”

The story – Sex and espionage: A long and sordid history (cnn.com 4-18-12)

The Mistake:  “…some of the secrets he was alleged to have passed on were in fact betrayed by CIA agent Aldrich Ames, And in Lonetree’s defense, the commandant of the Marine Corps said…”

The Copy Vigilante says: Anything with “Sex” in the title certainly gets my attention. Especially sex and spies! My two favorite Bond girls are Barbara Bach (The Spy Who Loved Me, 1977) and Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace, 2008.) But I digress. Just like the editor did who missed the erroneously uppercased “A” after “Ames” that should be lowercased!

cnn.com: Spacin’ Out

The story: Florida shooting renews debate over ‘stand your ground’ laws (cnn.com 3-20-12)

The mistake: “When you see any violence, it is always positive to go back and think about existing laws,” Scott said. “To review the impact and its consequences. ”

The Copy Vigilante says: Sometimes people need some space. If you eat too much food your pants will need space. But there shouldn’t be a space between a period and quotation marks!

Chalk up another one for the DUH column!

The story: It’s OK to mourn the loss of celebrities (cnn.com 2-25-12)

The mistake: “When a star dies, it’s painful and tragic, but certainly not the same as mourning the loss of those we’re close to, Josh Levs says.”

The Copy Vigilante says: A duh! A big fat screaming duh! This is one of the worst captions ever written. And is this supposed to be news analysis?
